Après un week-end sans compétition, l’échéance qui suivait, n’avait rien d’une sinécure. En effet, il s’agissait ni plus ni moins de la 4ème manche de la Coupe du monde d’Enduro qui se disputait à Samoëns en France. Faute de budget et voulant me concentrer cette saison principalement sur d’autres événements (Shimano Epic Enduro, Coupe de France, courses helvétiques etc…), c’était mon unique apparition parmi le gratin mondial avec pas moins de 300 pilotes!
Arrivé sur place dès jeudi midi, aucune reconnaissance n’était toutefois autorisée sauf sur la SP3 (à pied vendredi après-midi). C’était l’occasion de prendre un peu de repos, goûter à la fraîcheur bienfaitrice du Giffre, la rivière locale, et régler les derniers détails mécaniques. Contrairement à pas mal de riders, faute de temps, je n’étais pas venu rouler le secteur du Grand Massif au préalable mais gardais cependant bien en mémoire certaines spéciales parcourues l’an dernier à l’occasion de la Coupe de France.
A la publication des spéciales le vendredi, certaines ne m’étaient d’ailleurs pas inconnues. Sur ce format français une manche de reconnaissance sur chaque spéciale avait lieu avant la manche chronométrée (sauf sur la SP3 préalablement « marchée »). De grosses journées sur le plan physique donc, pour le haut du corps notamment.
Samoëns et sa météo perturbée c’est presque une histoire d’amour…pourtant cette année le terrain était diablement poussiéreux et pas de nuages à l’horizon… Quoique, le samedi au réveil, le ciel pèse de tout son gris… Après une manche de reconnaissance de la SP1 avec de belles sensations sur un sol sec offrant un très bon grip, un inévitable et puissant orage s’abat sur le charmant village. Ouf, nous sommes à l’abri dans le paddock, la télécabine est momentanément arrêtée.
Pneu avant changé, en route pour le 1er chrono. La piste a bien bougé et le grip est radicalement différent. Déjà hyper physique sur le sec, la pluie n’a pas rendu la tâche plus facile. Pas mal d’imprécisions, dur de piloter à 100% le dernier tiers du tracé avec une lucidité entamée et un terrain malicieux…vu de près à 10 mètres de l’arrivée. Près de 17 minutes d’effort tout de même!
La seconde spéciale ne présente pas le même profil. Beaucoup plus descendante, elle offre des passages engagés, de bons virages relevés très raide et poussiéreux ainsi que des sections pédalantes dans la partie finale. Que du plaisir! Bien content de ma prestation sur ces 11’41 » de dégringolade, je termine néanmoins à 1 minute tout rond de « E.T. » Vouilloz qui signe le « scratch ». Initialement 2 descentes étaient prévu sur ce tracé mais le retard lié à l’orage a contraint les organisateurs à supprimer une manche. Le départ de la spéciale 3 se gagne à la pédale sous une grosse chaleur. Une spéciale naturelle assez courte et très rapide avec une arrivée au coeur du village. Au terme de cette première journée, je pointe dans le top 70 scratch, plutôt satisfait!
Dimanche, ciel dégagé, motivation intacte, mais adducteurs et triceps bien entamés par le programme de la veille. Un départ au sommet du domaine grâce à une montée en télésiège appréciée par ces chaleurs! SP4: longue spéciale avec une 1ère partie rapide dans des virages relevés poussiéreux et des trajectoires ouvertes, une section pédalante puis une longue partie en forêt parsemée de compressions, épingles et dévers! SP5: spéciale rapide avec chicanes, épingles, goulets, un mini pierrier, et de belles relances avant de finir au paddock.
Après les manches de « reco », place au chrono. Difficile de trouver le même relâchement durant les manches de course… Emporté par la raideur de la pente je fais un tout droit de la SP4. De précieuses secondes égarées. Avec près de 13 minutes d’effort, il faut lutter dans la partie boisée pour tenir le guidon et ne pas partir à la faute. Enfin dans la SP5, bonnes sensations avec de bons passages malgré quelques soucis de transmission heureusement sans conséquences.
Malgré quelques erreurs sur le week-end, je reste bien content de ma régularité sur l’ensemble des tracés. Je termine finalement 68ème scratch avec un plateau de pilotes et un niveau assez incroyable! Un exercice parfait pour la prochaine manche de la Coupe de France qui se disputera aux Orres ce week-end, une nouvelle station à découvrir pour ma part. Bien placé au classement général il faudra à nouveau signer une solide performance pour glaner de nombreux points!

After a weekend without competition, the next race was the 4th round of the Enduro World Series which was played in Samoëns in France. Without enough money and wanting to concentrate mainly on other events this season (Shimano Epic, Enduro French Cup, Swiss races etc …), that was my only appearance among the world best riders. More than 300 riders were present.
Once there on Thursday afternoon no practice was however allowed except on th stage 3 (walking check Friday afternoon). It was an opportunity to take a rest, enjoy the freshness of the Giffre, the local river, and set the last mechanical details. Unlike a lot of riders, I hadn’t ridden the Grand Massif area beforehand but I still remembered some stages of the Enduro French Cup last year.
After the publication of the tracks on Friday, some stages weren’t unknown to me. On this French racing format, there was a practice run before each run of racing (except on the SP3 previously « walked »). So, long days physically, especially for the upper body.
Samoëns and disturbed weather is almost a love story … But this year the ground was terribly dusty and no clouds on the horizon … However, on Saturday morning, the sky was threatening … After the practice on the SP1 with good feeling on dry ground and a very good grip, an inevitable and powerful thunderstorm sweeps on the charming village. Luckily, we are in the paddock, the gondola is temporarily stopped.
Front tire changed, let’s for the first timing run. The track has changed a lot and the grip was radically different. Already hyper physical in dry conditions, the rain did not make the job easier. Too much inaccuracies, hard to control 100% the last third of the track with less lucidity and a « malicious » ground… I tasted it just before the finish. Nearly 17 minutes of effort!
The second stage didn’t have the same profile. Much more downhill, there were tricky sections, nice berms very steep and dusty and as well pedaling sections in the final part. So much fun! Very happy with my performance, I still finished 1 minute behind « E.T: » Vouilloz who realized the best time. Two runs were originally scheduled on this track but the delay because the storm forced the organizers to remove a stage. We need to pedal to reach the start of the stage 3 under a heavy heat. A rather short natural stage and very fast with a finish in the heart of the village. After this first day, I finished in the top 70 overall ranking, rather satisfied!
On Sunday, blue sky, good motivation but some painful muscles because the program of yesterday. The start was a the top of the spot through a chairlift appreciated in this heat! SP4: long stage with steep and dusty berms and wide-open track at the beginning, theb a pedaling section and a long part in forest with big holes and switchbacks. SP5: fast one with chicanes, nice switchbacks, rock garden and a pedaling section before finishing in the paddock.
After practices, it was time to challenge the clock. Hard to be « relax » as in the practice run during the heats of the race… In the stage 4, slope was so steep I did a straight. Precious seconds lost. With about 13 minutes of effort, we must fight in the wooded area to hold the handlebar and not to do any mistake. Finally in the SP5 good feeling despite some worries about gearing fortunately without consequences.
Despite some mistakes in the weekend, I am very happy with my consistency on every stage. I finally finished 68th with a pretty incredible level! A perfect training for the next round of the Enduro French Cup which will take place at Les Orres this weekend, a new resort to discover for myself. Well positioned in the overall ranking it will sign a solid performance to glean many points!
